Denver, CO — Denver Sister Cities International (DSCI) is proud to announce a significant milestone in the enduring relationship between Denver and Cuernavaca, Mexico. In collaboration with Lion’s Club Denver and Rotary Club Cuernavaca, our Denver Sister Cities International Cuernavaca Committee has successfully concluded a completely free ophthalmological campaign. This initiative aimed to provide essential eye care services to individuals in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Building upon the celebrations of the Taste of Mexico festival in Denver in July 2023, which commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Denver-Cuernavaca sister city, this initiative signifies the beginning of a new phase in our sister city relationship. During the festival, City Hall of Cuernavaca sent a representative, who spoke with Denver Mayor Mike Johnston about building upon the historic relationship between our cities. The Taste of Mexico bridged cultures, bringing a taste of Cuernavaca’s vibrant heritage to the historic heart of Downtown Denver in Larimer Square.
Strengthening Ties with Cuernavaca
The Denver Sister Cities International Cuernavaca Committee, along with Denver Lions Club and Rotary Cuernavaca, has taken citizen diplomacy to new heights through this vital community program. This program offered free eyeglasses to the residents of our sister city, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico during the campaign which happened from Oct. 24th – 28th. The Cuernavaca Committee met with the Mayor of Cuernavaca, José Luis Urióstegui. This interaction underscores the commitment to fostering international friendships and cooperation that have thrived for four decades. This endeavor not only exemplifies our commitment to “Peace through People” but also strengthens the bonds between Denver and Cuernavaca. It marks the beginning of a renewed sisterhood relationship, promising cultural, educational, and economic exchanges that will endure for years to come.
Changing Lives Through Citizen Diplomacy
One exceptional story from this program highlights its life-changing impact. A rescue worker needed to travel to Acapulco to assist in the evening but lacked the necessary glasses to drive safely at night. Through this initiative, this brave individual was equipped with the glasses he needed, enabling him to carry out his critical work effectively. This story serves as a powerful reminder of how citizen diplomacy and international cooperation can result in tangible, life-changing outcomes for communities in both Denver and Cuernavaca. It exemplifies the essence of our mission – “Peace through People.”
