About Potenza
Ancient Origins
Potenza traces its origins to the Lucanians, an ancient Italic people who settled the region well before Roman expansion. Its elevated position in the Apennine Mountains offered natural protection and strategic advantage, shaping the city’s early role as a fortified settlement and regional center.
Roman and Medieval Influence
Under Roman rule, Potenza became an important administrative and cultural hub. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city experienced successive periods of Byzantine, Lombard, and Norman influence. These layers of history remain visible in Potenza’s urban layout, architectural remnants, and enduring civic traditions.
Resilience Through Change
Throughout the Middle Ages and into the modern era, Potenza endured earthquakes, political shifts, and economic transformation. Rather than erasing its identity, these challenges strengthened the city’s resilience and deepened its commitment to preservation. Restoration efforts following major seismic events helped balance modernization with respect for historic character.
Potenza Today
Today, Potenza stands as the capital of the Basilicata region and one of Italy’s highest provincial capitals. It is a city where history and daily life coexist, marked by cultural festivals, educational institutions, and a strong sense of community pride. Potenza continues to honor its past while actively engaging with international partners through cultural exchange and civic collaboration.
